 Ligature Position & Tightness
Author: BGBG

Lyre M13 88 MP, Rovner Mark III fabric type ligature. Is there a certain position and tightness for ligature or do you just start in a position and tightness and adjust and fine-tune it as you play? I start with reed about even with end of MP, ligature between top and bottom lines on MP, and snug and maybe half turn more. Sometimes I seem to need to move reed slightly up or down and tighten or loosen slightly. Is this the customary way? Never had any detailed instruction on this.

I think a lot of this is how it works for you. Try the reed up past the mpc tip, then lower than the tip just to see how it plays for you. I think Bonade said the top of the ligature should be way down, like a 1/4" below the mpc line mark. I tried it different positions and doesn't seem to make any difference. I just tighten so the reed is snug, never overtighten.

Ok, it makes sense to me to use the REED as the guide for where to position the ligature. The lines of ligature on the mouthpiece couldn't possibly be more arbitrary. I place a ligature so that you see the same amount of the bark of the reed BELOW the ligature as you see ABOVE the ligature (this way you're balancing the tightness around the most inert part of the reed - if there is such a thing).

This position is THE MIDDLE. Often times things will sound a little more resonant if you position the ligature slightly lower than this "middle" (sometimes not, but it is a rare ligature that I've had that didn't respond well a little low).

As for tightness, if you are not switching from Bb to A all the time you could easily experiment with leaving the ligature very VERY loose (just as you feel the screw begin to grab). Experiment with your ears. Try really tight, then really loose. If you don't hear a difference, then there is no reason to leave it loose (you can conceivably bump the reed with you tongue sending it off to one side or the other - inconvenient at best).

As you posed in your question: "start in a position and tightness and adjust and fine-tune it as you play?"

Yes: Up/Down; Tight/Loose; Left/Right; Etc./Etc.
It can be different for variations in each reed, humidity, elevation, hall acoustics, temperature, etc. Don't get stuck on "this is THE way."

I would only say to that, that ideally you want to achieve as much constancy as possible. If you an find a mouthpiece that works great (may not be best, there is no such thing) and use it exclusively for the next 30 years, you'll be much better off than if you use 30 different mouthpieces in that time.

Variables can be your worst enemy. Find what works for you and use it.

It should always be below the vamp part of the reed and should be secure enough to prevent air or moister from getting between to facing of the MP and the reed. After that it's a matter of feel and response. Some reeds may require lowering it a bit or making it more snug. Since every reed is different it stands to reason the poistion and tightness of the ligiture might be slightly different as well. I like to keep mine firm but not so much as to choke off the vibration. One major advantage of the Rovener as opposed to a metal ligature, doesn't choke off when snug.
