I'm going to start a trio with an oboist I know and we hope to gig at weddings and anywhere else that'll take us. Any suggestions for a well-matching third instrument? Something portable so no pianos. I'm thinking Cello so that we have something to play the low end but I'm open to suggestions. We expect to do some arranging to make the trio work but if the instrumentation also has a repertoire, that's a bonus.

Clarinet, oboe and bass clarinet is one trio I have played in, with the bass using just the low register. Takes the place of the cello.

Oboe, clarinet and bassoon is a pretty standard wind trio instrumentation.
Add a flute to augment to a quartet and also a horn for the tradition wind quintet.
I have played many military officers mess events, usually on ladies night where they like quiet background music and also a couple of weddings either as a quartet or quintet.
Personally I feel a trio is a little bit limiting but of course on the plus side you only split the cash 3 ways!

If you transpose C parts or have a C clarinet, there are thousands of trio sonatas that can be played with an oboe, clarinet, and cello or bassoon trio.
