I recently got my Buffet RC back from a total overhaul and find the throat A and Bflat to be very flat, while everything else is perfectly OK according to my tuner. I can't even lip the throat notes into tune. Is this my fault (i.e., should I be using a slightly harder read)? Or is likely to be a problem with adjustment? I could use some advice before taking the instrument back.
This will be the third time I've taken back to fix little things that displeased me or my teacher, so I want to make sure I've got my facts right. I did notice that the A key does not rise as much as on my teacher's RC, and wonder if this might be causing the problem.

Oops -- I should have said a harder reed. Reminds me of the old joke that what united bookworms and clarinetists is that they both enjoy a good read.

The cork that restricts how far the Ab key opens may be too thick holding the throat keys too close resulting in flat notes. Just a thought.....good clarineting!!!!!!

It's not your fault, assuming it was playing 'okay' before you took it in.
Take it back, ask the person who worked on it to adjust it for you. Don't do any adjusting yourself, you paid for a complete job.
Then play it... *Yourself*. Don't leave until it plays to Your satisfaction.
No matter what reed or mpc, it should play reasonably in tune.

It's very possible that the A key is not opening enough. Have the repairman open it a little bit at a time until the your A and B flat are in tune.

The point is, I think, that you paid THEM (not a small amount either) to do the job. You have every right to expect it to be done right - not to make trips back and forth to fix it again or end up adjusting it yourself. Later on, you may need to make some minor adjustment here and there. For now you want it done Right.
The cost of transportation is rising by the minute - deduct mileage from the repair bill for return visits (smile)....

I agree with the above [and your analysis, B J] that the problem is in the A/Ab key opening/venting. Did you pay the repairer for any "tuning"? if so take your tuner for demonstration [actually any tech should do this without being asked -IMHO]. Don
