Hello! I was thinking about getting some composing software. What are some decent composing programs for Windows and about how much do they cost? Also, do any programs have a feature where you play and it writes what you play? Thanks!

I have had a terrific time with Sibelius. About $700 to purchase, or $250 if you qualify for an educational discount.

A great cheap one is Noteworthy Composer for about $40. Download and try the shareware version.

My school has a program called "Overture." Its a pretty good program. You can hook up a keyboard and it will notate what you play. The only problem is it will leave out alot of notes or notate it differently. Other than that it's a nice program that makes composition much easier. I don't know what it costs though.

Noteworthy is really a bargain. Down load the trial version, and then send them the measly $40 bucks. You can go get one of the slicker pricey packages after that.

Noteworthy will let you record via midi keyboard, is very easy to learn, plays back nicely etc.

I have one problem, I don't always like the spacing on the staves. Sometimes I want to force the repeat to be at the end of a line and can only do so with great difficulty. Does anyone know a trick for that?

Ginny: You can force a break in Noteworthy by selecting the bar line in question, right clicking and selecting Properties in the pop-up menu. Check the box that says "force system break."

I recommend NoteWorthy also.

I have to second Allen's remarks about Sibelius. It's one of the most fantastic scoring programs I've ever used.

I went from Rhapsody, to Encore, to Finale in the last couple years, and while each of them did the job, they all had quirks that required me to spend a lot more time than I wanted dealing with formatting issues.

Sibelius' keyboard entry system is superb. It's fast, easy to use, and you can get up to speed in a couple hours of use. The user interface is much more intuitive than that of the others (which delve deep into point, click, re-click land).

It's quite a budget buster if you don't qualify for the educational price, but I still feel it's worth every penny.

Thanks guys. I guess Noteworthy is the way to go, because Sibelius is a little expensive for me.
