It was invented by a fellow named Denner in the 1700s. Check any encyclopedia for details.
The first composer to really do anything significant with the clarinet was Mozart. He wrote a concerto for the clarinet that is still considered to be one of the greatest works for clarinet ever written. Prior to that, the clarinet was not very popular. Once Mozart wrote this concerto, its popularity grew. This concerto was originally written for and performed by a fellow named Anton Stadler, who was a highly rated clarinet player of that time. Stadler's ability to play this concerto also helped to popularize the clarinet. At that time, clarinets were not as advanced as they are now, so the concerto was harder to play than it would be on modern instruments.
