Hey everyone, I'm looking to get some personal advice on some different bass mouthpieces. I've been playing bass all my life both for my degree and professionally. For my clarinets (Bb and A festival) I have a Lomax Classic A1G and I'm completely happy with it. Every note speaks beautifully, articulation is flawless and it just really works for me.
For my bass I have a Richard Hawkins S (Buffet Prestige Low C). While I really do believe he makes fantastic products I feel as though I've always been longing for more. I feel like I'm missing something in my playing that I have on my Bb. I wish it could do as much as my clarinet mouthpiece can do. Which brings me to my question.
I'm asking to see if anyone has played any of the Lomax Bass mouthpieces. I've never been able to try one or been around anyone who plays one. I specifically want to see if anyone owns both a Bb and Bass Lomax. I'm curious if they think they play the same on both instruments, because that's what I think (more or less) what I'm looking for.
I know there's a ton of bass mouthpieces out there and I would appreciate any advice on the subject but I'm curious really if anyone knows if the Lomax Bass mouthpieces play similar to their Bb Counterparts. Thanks!

Sorry, have not tried a Lomax, but my Walter Grabner bass mpc does everything that I need it to do. I also play a Prestige low C bass that Lisa helped me select, if that helps any. My soprano mpcies are a vintage Chicago Kaspar and a Grabner K11*.

I haven't tried Lomax bass mouthpieces, but I tried/used various Vandoren, Zinner based, Selmer and Bay bass mouthpieces and now playing on a Behn Vintage mouthpiece and I'm pretty sure it's the last bass mouthpiece I had to buy. It has all the good properties I like without compromise. Even resistance, precise attack, beautiful sound, effortless playing.

I got my Clarinets from Lisa. I live in the Chicago land area. Does Walter let you go and try some of them out?

I've heard good things about them, a little pricey but I'm willing to pay it if it's worth that huge price jump.

I can't remember if I tired them or not but because the instruments are so different using the same MP on a clarinet and bass clarinet will not necessarily give you the same result. The only way you will ever know what's best is to try them. I've used a Selmer C* voiced by Dave McClune and my second was a Fobes RR facing, very close. Why don't you call Muncy or another major mail order store and see how many they will send you on a trial bases. You can do that with several stores until you find the perfect fit. Try several brands, once you find the one you like try several of those because every single MP plays a little different.

With regard to Walter Grabner, he is very quick to respond to email requests and his web site outlines how he handles sending out mouthpieces on a trial basis.
He's also quite willing to engage in telephone discussions about 'needs and wants'.

RDG Woodwinds has an excellent trial program. They carry Vandoren, Selmer and Clark Fobes products. Although Clark's bass mouthpieces aren't listed on the site, they may have it in stock. Obviously the online catalog is not representative of everything they carry.
If you cover shipping upfront they will send you 3 mouthpieces with no additional charge. I think it's 20.00 flat rate for a round trip, and whatever doesn't make it back you pay for. Pretty sweet deal.

I have not played any of the Lomax, but since clarinet and bass are a different animal, I don't know if it matters. I think you just need to find what works well for you.
That said, Clark Fobes makes a great bass mouthpiece and in a number of facings. They are well worth considering, as well as the other ones mentioned here.
