Waterlogged Reeds

Have read you do not want the reed to become 'waterlogged'. What are the chaacteristics to know if a reed is in fact waterlogged?

A heavily waterlogged reed will be noticeably darker and more transparent at the tip from having too much water in it, and probably won't play as well.
Piece of advice I learned at Tanglewood: You can put the reed on a flat piece of glass/plexiglass and squeeze the water out of the tip of the reed if it gets to this point. Rub your thumb towards the tip with quite a bit of pressure and the water will seep out.

I have a BARI reed in my case that I occasionally slip behind my cane reed- still on the mouthpiece- so I can very carefully squeeze out water with my thumb. And it definitely recharges the reed for a brief spell.

And that's the only good use I've found for a BARI reed.

Waterlogging is why I stopped using Mitchell Lurie reeds when I was a kid. Are they still especially prone to that issue? It's not a problem I ever have now, but then again I don't soak my reeds either.

BARI is a brand of plastic / synthetic reed. The one I bought I never got any good play out of. All my fault I'm sure.

Since that time, I used solely Legere' reeds on Bb clarinet and on almost always on bass. Occasionally, I'll use a cane reed on bass but since I stopped using LaVoz reeds I have not experienced the waterlogged problem. Must have been that brand of reed.

If you break your reeds in properly and don't soak them that will never happen. Read my website about breaking in your reeds.
