I started reading a new book last night called, "The Inner Game of Music", by Barry Green and co-authored by Timothy Gallwey. I'm sure a lot of you have read it and it has probably been mentioned here on the BB before but I have not seen it in the posts I've read.
Gallwey wrote "The Inner Game of Tennis" years ago, among other "Inner Game......." books on sports. Barry Green, a bass player and teacher, enthralled by Tim's book, "The Inner Game of Skiing", asked him to write a book about music. Tim sent Green on a three year research mission and told him if he returned with enough reasearch data on the subject, he would assist him with the book.
The book is a must for those who are auditioning, going to competitions, etc. Barry Green talks about the inner game and not the outer game of how we look at ourselves and our music. He discusses the demons within us that infibit our efforts to be more successful.
It may be to late for this book to help those auditioning at this time but there is always next year. I am only on chapter three but it is easy to read (and reread if necessary) and all ages from Jr. High (Middle School to some) on up should have no trouble following his thinking. I am eager to see how it helps me to develop ("one, two +, three +, four) my clarineting - look out Pete, here I come. I thank Kevin (my teacher) for introducing this book to me (or is it, ...introducing me to the book? - whatever).
