Mark, would you look up in the Langwell the Martel Freres
firm? An issue of the Clarinet Magazine sometime in the past indicated this to be a very popular French clarinet
much used in England between the wars and the Boosey &
Hawkes to be a copy of the Martel instrument. Would appreciate any information you might find. In addition, how does one buy a copy of the Langwell?

I think Doug may want Martin Freres, not Martel. I think they're still in business, making student and intermediate instruments.
However, there was a maker Martel, around the turn of the century, who was reputed to make extremely fine instruments. In the Reginald Kell issue of The Clarinet several years ago, the writer said he played Martel clarinets (or perhaps "false Martel," whatever that is). I'll check in Kroll and Brymer tonight.

No, Ken, I don't mean Martin Freres, just the name as
printed, Martel. You have read the same article in the
clarinet magazine of some time ago, as I did and I have
the same information you mention. The company was Martel
Freres, had apparently a very good reputation early in
this century and now no one seems to know much about them.
The info from Mark is great and more than I had before.

Rendall [1954],in "Makers" lists Martel as "Paris Modern" and Baines in "Woodwind Insts" on page 122 [paperback]makes mention which might be of interest.
