I have an older Pedler (Elhart) two-piece metal clarinet SN# 38799. Is this a genuine Pedler or a newer one? The bell has ray-like designs and says "Pedler."

I believe the original ones have removable bells so if your bell is permanently attached to the rest of the clarinet I would say no it is not one of the original Pedler instruments.

AFAIK if it's marked "the Pedler company" it's from 1936 or later after the 1930 takeover by Martin Band Instruments. If it says "Harry Pedler Co" it's pre 1936 but may not be pre 1930. I have a wood Harry Pedler and an ebonite Pedler Company; the differences are striking.

You have one of the later Pedler metal clarinets made after Harry Pedler retired. The sought-after professional Harry Pedler clarinets all have a removable bell on which is engraved a shield surrounded by a floral/vine patern. Inside the shield is engraved "Made By Harry Pedler & Co Elkhart Ind". These clarinets also have a permanently attached adjustable barrel. Nobody is sure just how many of these clarinets were made but they occupy a much lower serial number range than yours. Mine is #5822.
