Some of you may recall when the topics of clarinets came up in my older post about making c# sound better, but now I am visiting in NJ and there is a better selection of used clarinets available. My current set up is a Buffet b12 with a Vandoren 5rv lyre and rovner lig. I use v12's 3 1/2 and I just got some rico grand concert thick blank samples 3 1/2 that I quite like. So far I have seen these on craigslist that seem appealing, but there is always the ridenour option which I also really like. I'm in the jersey shore/ south jersey and I'm planning a trip to NY soon, so if anyone is aware of other better options let me know.

Thanks in advance

Two suggestions: 1) try before you buy; and 2) pick the clarinet that plays the best, not the one with the "reputation".

The Leblanc Sonata is essentially a Concerto with inline trill keys according to Tom Ridenour if I remember correctly. I've played on several Sonatas in my job, and all played well.

I will be trying the buffet , but the others are kinda far away. Their close enough that if I were to buy it I can drive but it seems kinda pointless to drive just to try

I believe the Backun Protege is a good option.
It's not that easy to find, though. Specially a used one.

I wish I could find a current, comprehensive comparison of all the various professional clarinet models from each major maker - Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha, and Leblanc - along with professional clarinets from smaller but respected vendors. Since prices at the different levels vary between vendors, it's hard to make sense of the many offerings by reading ads and limited published comparisons (like on the Woodwinds & Brass site.)
Just seeing the entire vendor lineups listed, from top of the line on down, would be of interest. It would be even better to learn what the distinguishing features between models are. Better yet would be reviews by professionals of comparable models, along with commentary feedback from customers - sort of a Consumer Guide for clarinets.
My web searching has only found unsatisfactory pieces of the above. I've found some discussions from this board that touched on bits of it, like, Leblanc such-and-such vs Buffet R13, etc. But I want it all! Anyone know of such a resource?

Me too even though I only have limited options. My craigslist links have been removed is that against TOS? Regardless my current options are a Leblanc sonata Ridenour 560bc Selmer signet soloist Buffet c12 and maybe a Protege if I can find one.

Gosh the post about comparing the written descriptions gave me the willies!!!
I'll give one completely unrelated analogy first. If you look at the specs of the standard run-of-the-mill stereos (i.e. watts and amps), they blow away the specs of the uber expensive esoteric audio. However if you listen to the difference, the choice is obvious.
This was going the long way to say that the manufacturer's descriptions probably only go as far as to tell you what the difference is from one of their models to another one of the same manufacturer's models. THE ONLY way to experience a top of the line Selmer, or Buffet, or Yamaha or Ridenour is to try them.
This has to be accomplished by either getting the instrument to you, or by you going to the instrument......you HAVE TO TRY THEM to know.
