If you have not read his article in the recent "Clarinetist" edition, he talks about some important issues regarding our art. His take on the current audition practice and the need for change made me want to stand up and say, AMEN!!! Too much emphasis is placed on solo performance as opposed to playing within the ensemble and why be required to play 1st excerpts if auditioning for 2nd. Also, how many times will you really have to perform the Mozart Concerto in your orchestra?? He also advocates versatility--play all the clarinets and all styles of music, not just classical. A very well written and informative article.............

A friend of mine recently did an series of interviews at a bank. The bank is situated next to a river. In one of the interviews he was asked to calculate how much water ran through the river past the bank per day. Of course he's never going to have to do that in the job, but they wanted to see how he would approach a problem.
Just because you're auditioning for second clarinet doesn't mean that the Mozart Concerto and some 1st clarinet excerpts won't show a lot about how you play.
I agree that ensemble playing in auditions can also show a lot and should be done more.
