My friend plans on buying a clarinet and wants to know if it is wooden. Unfortunately all I have is this picture of it and I was wondering if you guys knew about it?

so it does to me.

Of course, there are clarinet with wooden bodies and plastic bells or barrels, and vice versa. (my Amati 251 has a plastic body and a wooden bell, one of my Noblets has a hard rubber body and a plastic bell)

Compare the body joints with that wooden bell and you'll know.

Set a flame to it,

If it melts it's plastic

If it catches fire it's wood.

You're showing your age Funfly. The float test replaced the burn test years ago. :)

It's an old F. E. Olds clarinet. (At least the bell is, can't tell about the rest of it from the picture.) The bell is wood. Can't tell about the rest of it from the picture. Wood or plastic doesn't make much difference here. Tell your friend it isn't worth more than about $60 unless it has a valuable old mouthpiece in the case.

Best regards,
jnk

Grenadilla doesn't float.

Depends on what you're trying to float it on, doesn't it? [rotate]

Looks wooden to me. Tho photo also shows a severe case of nickel plating flaking off of the keys. I suggest that your friend NOT consider this clarinet at ANY price.

The Olds "Opera" was made by Buffet and is valuable--the other wooden Olds clarinets were made by Malerne and possibly others, and retain little value in today's market.

It's wooden. I'd bet heavily on it....

Hold one end of either joint up to the light and look down it.....if it's really shiny and smooth, light may sort of bounce around inside it, it's plastic.

Can do the same thing with mouthpieces or barrels.
