The US to my knowledge doesn't recognize the grades for any particular purpose; conservatories and colleges are free to set their own requirements for competence.

Jun -

It's a big question, and it has a big answer.

For tonguing, see http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=32780&t=32715, which describes a great method I learned years ago from the well known clinician Bob Lowrey.

For finger exercises, I'm afraid there's no substitute for Baermann Part 3, which systematically goes through all the scales and arpeggios. It's a mountain of work that takes a long time to work through, but every successful player does it. You just have to keep at it. I described it in more detail at http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=34403&t=34359.

Refinement of finger technique is a task that is never finished. Read the wonderful story told by Daniel Bouwmeester, a young professional player who learned a hard lesson in an exhilarating way. http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=38862&t=38845

Best regards.

what pieces are you thinking of doing for your grade 8? and why are you having second thoughts? if you can play the pieces competently you should be ok - i did grade 8 a couple of years ago but there are a lot of scales to be learned! it took me about 6 months to do them all from memory

i play the 3rd movements from stravinsky's three pieces for clarinet, Brahms's sonata in Eb and Schumann' fantasiestucke.
the way my teacher is teaching now, i think i have a lot to brush up....specially on my fingers...
over here, ABRMS is more popular and expensive somehow i feel that trinity has the same quality...i dun know why...?? i prefer trinity as one of the exam items was to introduce the pieces i would be playing. therefore i need to know the history of the pieces i playing...
i hate the scales but still have to practice...so sad...
