I think companies like it when we wear them out faster and buy more of them. The initial year or so of the Vandorens was great. Now they wear out pretty quickly. I need to go back to the Runyons (I think) that are clear and have the 3M logo on the protective backing (those always lasted through having them one way, then the other once the teeth depressions set in to the initial side.

Runyon black with clear on top works great and lasts forever, but isn't the most economical. The chinese from fleeBay (~$4 for 8) are also good, but not sure for brand (they look letter U).

I like the new Rico Reserve patch, especially the thick black ones. I also swear by the thick Runyon patches.
The vandoren ones do have a tendency to bite through.

The Rico patches seem to last longer, and the glue is a bit stronger. Other brands tend to slip, especially in warmer weather.

I like the thin ones, from Bay and Protec. However, I just recently purchased 5 yards of UHMW tape (search "TapeCase 423-5 UHMW Tape 3/4" x 5yds") and I don't believe I'll ever have to purchase individual cushions again.

Howarth has a nice selection of mouthpiece patches. I really like the yamaha .8mm soft type.

Be cautious if you like to clean your mouthpiece with oils- the surface texture of a patch will be lost if you do this. Gets rubbery more quickly.
(I did this because I was refacing a mp for a friend- take the patch off FIRST)

I've been using the large/clear cushions from BG or Vandoren or Leblanc (formerly Bay) for years; they seem pretty similar so I buy whatever is cheapest per cushion at the time (beware, the various brands provide a different quantity of cushions per pack).
I can't play any single-reed instrument without mouthpiece cushions. Especially crystal mouthpieces, which otherwise transmit a painful amount of vibration to your upper teeth, not to mention the slippage issue.
For cleaning off old cushion glue, I recommend using acetone (briefly!) to get all the gunk off, then immediately washing with dish soap and warm water, followed by a thorough clean-water rinse.
