I gotta tell you all - it's weird getting the congrats from people you've never seen - but nice :^)

Steve's teacher (Richard Hawkins up at Interlochen) tells me Steve is a "monster player" ... we'll see over the next 4 years how everything turns out. You can never tell!

Just a reminder that if you're interested in Interlochen and getting instructions from (IMNSHO) one of the best teachers of clarinet that I've met, drop Richard a line at hawkinsrg@aol.com. There are scholarships available. I can highly recommend the place, no matter what year of high school you'll be entering next year. I'm not receiving any payment for this endorsement of Richard & Interlochen (even though I wish I was :^)

Some one posted that students taught by Cohen are necessitated to change to Buffet RC Prestiges.Tom Ridenour posted to ask Cohen himself about whether it is real or not.
What became of the result,I wonder? If real, you need much money(B-flat and A RC Prestiges will cost very much!).
Steve Cohen uses Buffet RC Prestiges manufactured by Buffet before B&H obtained it.He uses Olivieri reeds.
-------
You mean Franklin Cohen?

In any case my son will not be getting Prestiges; teachers can ask all they want, but unless they're the ones to buy the clarinets for my son they'll just have to do without. Any teacher who makes a particular model/brand clarinet required should put that into the college catalog. They can make suggestions, of course, and if a student did not have adequate equipment then those suggestions would most probably direct the student towards what the particular teacher likes.

I'd like to make it clear, however, that Franklin Cohen did not mention anything like this during the audition, and my son has mentioned nothing of the sort. His clarinets are perfectly adequate for the time being and most probably well into the future; if and when he wants new ones he'll have to work for them.

Mark--
I graduated from CIM as a bassoonist--and Cohen does NOT require his students to use Prestige instruments. In fact, Cohen is the type of teacher who is very experimental and he changes his equipment often. Each one of his students uses a different type of mouthpiece, although I do believe that they favor Pyne. I live and work in NYC, and Pyne is used here too (though it is tough to fing a good one...) I personally use a Hite M41 that has been customized by my teacher John Moses. Oh, and yes... bassoon is correct at the top... I studied bassoon and flute at Eastman, and simultaneaously studied sax and clarinet with various people--favoring the Joe Allard school of clarinet and sax teaching/playing. Best of luck to your son.

Thanks, Paul. I want to make myself really clear here - Franklin Cohen didn't say anything to us about needing a Prestige, and I'm sure he would have had he required one. I have great respect for the teachers that Steve auditioned for, and none of them had any specific requirements as to clarinets. He auditioned for Franklin Cohen, Don Montanaro, Julie DeRoche, Yehuda Gilad, Tom Martin, Fred Ormand, and one more whose name slips my mind. Not one mentioned anything about needing a particular clarinet, and only a couple mentioned anything about any particular part of his setup (there was some interest in his mouthpiece - it's a Hawkins customized for him by Hawkins).
I have heard anecdotes about particular teachers requiring particular clarinets, but none apply in my son's case (and Daniel, no one said a word about his playing a Festival (big grin :^) )

Paul,
If I remember right Franklin Cohen participated in many of Benade's acoustical and clarinet experiments when Benade needed an expert clarinet player.

Mark--
The Hawkins mouthpieces are very good! I have two, but because of the people I work with in NY, I have to use a Hite in order to blend or "fit in."

Mark,
Wasn't your son accepted several places? If so, I am curious why he picked this one?

Yes, he was accepted into a number of places. His current teacher, Richard Hawkins, knows many of the teachers in the US and abroad and recommends different teachers to his students. The recommendations have to do with what Richard feels would be the best complement to the students' strengths and weaknesses. Along with tuition costs and scholarships we balanced Steve's needs for work in particular areas. CIM ended up being among the best fits, both artistically and financially.

I posted my question about Prestige with some doubt and was relieved to read that there is no such unreasonable situation in CIM, which is very famous also in Japan.

The only pitfall I can think of in studying with a clarinetist as fine as Franklin Cohen would be the temptation to just sort of forget to play the lesson for him. In your son's place, I'm afraid I'd try to wheedle Cohen to demonstrate everything, just so I could listen to him! ;-) But seriously, what a great opportunity for your son. Congratulations! I enjoy seeing people's success stories here and I'll bet they inspire the youngsters on the site.
