He da man!
If only he had written for the bass clarinet (granted, it had barely been invented in modern form at that time).

Well, today's not Pete's birthday, now is it?
Besides, Joe B's clarinet parts are a bit nicer than Pete T's, IMHO.

David,
It is Tchaikovsky's birthday today, 170 years old. Funny how they shared the same birthday yet didn't like each other or their respective music.

Thanks, Peter, I should have looked it up -- what a coincidence! Then today is indeed a good day for clarinetists everywhere.
I wish Pete T. had written more bass clarinet parts, though. The Nutcracker is OK, but it's just not enough.............

They shared not only their birthday, but the admiration for the same clarinetist, Richar Muhlfeld. Remember, Tchaikovsky was to write a concerto for him, planned to be completed at the end of the year of his death.

My comment was in reference to Peter Tschaikovsky and the fact that he didn't write clarinet music like Brahms did.

Didn't they both love Bizet's Carmen, and once have dinner together before seeing a performance of it?

Had to issue a correction re Tchaikovsky's use of the bass clarinet. Nutcracker, for sure, but solo-rich parts in the Manfred Symphony, Voyvode tone poem, and best of all the opera Queen of Spades. In Brahms' time the bass clarinet was already being used by Berlioz, Wagner, Meyerbeer and others. I suspect that Brahms was just awfully conservative about instrumentation: I don't think he ever wrote for the English horn either. About the only instrument he ever used that wasn't used by Beethoven was the tuba.

You're no doubt correct about the other bass clarinet parts Tchaikovsky wrote, Larry, but it seems to me those other works are rarely if ever played. No matter. Thank goodness there is plenty of good 20th-century music with decent bass clarinet parts. So I plan to postpone my personal celebration until Shostakovich's birthday (or maybe Alban Berg's?).
