Random OT Question Re: Prelude to act 3 of Tannhauser ...

From a friend of mine ...

Random Question.
Do you know of any orchestral percussion forums out there?

I'm performing Prelude to act 3 of Tannhauser, and trying to figure out why some
recordings use the snare drum instead of Tambourine. Tambourine is marked in the
score. I've asked around, and no one seems to know.

Several orchestral percussionists subscribe to
http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/, including one who says he used to play with the New York Philharmonic.

The material at IMSLP doesn't seem to indicate any battery percussion in Act 3 of Tannhauser. Are you sure that's the excerpt you mean?

I'm informed that the term "Tamburin" (used in Act 1) properly designates a snare drum played with the snares off, but I've known percussionists to use a tambourine instead.
