 Buescher 400 Clarinet
Author: Playsk8r

I've found a NOS buescher 400 for sale, and I am wondering if anyone knows anything about it. Is it a stencil, or a clarinet actually made by buescher. And how would this compare to a Buffet Evette/E-11?

thanks, alex b

Orthodox belief is that the 400 is a Selmer USA Signet. If true it's a reasonably decent student horn. How it compares to a Buffet would depend on you.Playsk8r wrote:

I recently fitted a LH Ab/Eb lever to a Signet 100 for a player who sold his RC Prestige in favour of the Signet 100, but missed the LH Ab/Eb lever.

Again it goes to show that Buffet aren't the be all and end all.

Alex, the Buescher 400 is functionally identical to a Selmer Signet 100. The 400 may or may not have a different tenon ring design, but that is the only difference. A Buescher 400 probably dates from the 1960s or 1970s.

The general consensus on these instruments is that some do not play in tune, and some have keys that bend easily. If a thorough inspection and test play reveals an instrument without these issues, I see no reason to pass it up in favour of an Evette. Play them both, and judge for yourself what works best for you.

Cheers...Greg

The Evette definitely has the better overall build quality of the two, but it's all down to which one you prefer playing.

By the way, Chris...nice job on that left-hand Eb/Ab lever!
