The Lutoslawski also is a piece for clarinet.

LIVE audio in just a few minutes here....It's the 3rd piece after Bartok and Lutoslawski.

I'll try to find the archive......

I certainly think you should listen to it:

As in his previous performance of the Weber quintet in the Verbier festival, Fröst is an object lesson for us all in his sensitivity both to the text and to the orchestral accompaniment, into which he fits his superbly judged interpretation like a glove.

No problem is too trivial for him to have addressed. He must have spent countless hours in preparation.

Tony

Too bad sarcasm doesn't translate well over the internet.

(I apologize if I am mistaken, but that Weber was awful. Even the other strings players were laughing at him. However, I generally respect Fröst's mastery of the instrument [if not always his musicianship] and realize that for whatever reason he was having a really bad day.)

The clarinet playing in the opening of the Bartok is lovely.

The gem-like quality of the orchestral clarinetist in the Bartok was indeed a joy to hear. Was that Patrick Messina on his Buffet Vintage model cl. by any chance? I think he just might have upstaged Frost. The entire woodwind section of this orchestra plays so together, they are like one person expertly playing many instruments. Their phrasing and intonation are superb.

Is there an archive link of this, or did you just hear it when broadcast??

David,

Go to the third post above--the one from Tony Pay--and click on the URL he gives. Then select ECOUTER L'EMISSION to hear the entire program.

The clarinetist in the Bartok is Bruno Bonansea.

Thank you, Sylvain. I didn't know that Bruno Bonansea had moved up to become first chair in that orchestra. Funny how I went to listen to the broadcast interested in hearing Frost and went away more interested in who the first chair clarinet in the orchestra was instead.

I googled and found some great audio clips at Bruno Bonansea Musicien Clarinettiste. He plays sections from the Francaix Concerto, the Schumann Romances, Stravinsky Three Pieces, etc, all with great presence, flair, and virtuoso technique.

Buffet claims he plays their Festival Clarinet. His assurance and full bodied sonority in the Francaix, even in the altissimo passages that often sound thin and shrill, should be enough to turn many ears in his direction.
