 Schumann, Silence, 4'33" and Rap
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

Western classical music is rooted in silence. The music wells up from the church choir loft and the organ behind the screen. My classical music roots begin with chant and end with the apotheosis of tonality, Cage's 4'33", with its return to silence. For me, Schumann's music especially grows out of silence.

Today, children grow up in urban cacophony. Their music is rooted in it that, and their natural language is rap.

This idea is of course not original with me. For more, go to http://onesquareinch.org/.
