Burt Hara is a fine gentleman, and a topper musician who sure knows how to play the clarinet, I reckon.

This situation is so like the Spokane Symphony fiasco. Somehow the board of directors of the symphony merged itself with the board of the beautifully restored theater where the symphony performs.
Now, the symphony is the "captive band" for the theater; and is not treated as an artistic entity. It is regarded as a cost center and exploited to improve the mark-up on concerts. The musicians make about the same money as the (few) full-time clerks at WalMart after a nasty strike. That's it! There are the most asinine "promotions" conducted (lets all get on a bus and go listen to the LA Phil).
During the strike, we had a few wonderful "Lock Out Concerts." These had the same spirited sort of audiences described in hinotehud's link.

I thought Burt was moving on to his new LA Phil. gig?
