Go check out some laptop bags designed for large laptops (17 inch laptops). These bags tend tohave a shoulder strap, have enough room for a single clarinet case (I bought a cheap small case for 10 bucks on the internet that is slimmer than the standard buffet case), has room for music books and oversized concert music (the reason for a 17 inch bag), easily under five pounds, has padding which is designed to insulate and protect a laptop, but just gives you that much more padding for theclarinet in it's case.

As a bonus, laptop bags have lots of little pockets so you have a small spot to put a reedcase (usually the "calculator" spot), pens and pencils, extra ligatures, some small screwdrivers, and whatever else you want to ensure you have with you.

As a double bonus, the MOST expensive laptop cases are STILL usually less than a barebones altieri bag, and MORE room for any books and accessories.

Alexi: When what small single case do you recommend for inside the laptop case and where did you find it? In my situation, the situation the single case will need to go inside a backpack style book bag rather than laptop case, but it is the same principle.

This isn't the exact case I found, but this one seems to work and have dimensions that would fit in a laptop bag...

I managed to get lucky and find a used case. When I asked a few years back, I was told a "pouchette" case from buffet or Yamaha would work, and I've seen suggestions of getting an oboe case and crushing down the foam a little more to make it work.

Some laptop bags work well with a standard buffet case too (the one I'm using now fits a standard buffet r13 case). The main thing I love is having the pockets and pouches to organize it and carry around extra accessories. I carry extra screwdrivers, my marching band pouch and folio, extra barrels, reed case, pencils, big sheet music, little sheet music, a scale book, and I throw my ipad in there too.

I've found over the years that sometimes an item being branded for a particular trade or hobby makes the price increase while the same or similar item branded for a different hobby, is much cheaper. Clarinet case? Expensive. Laptop bag? Cheap. I've started looking for alternatives that will work as well, but aren't specifically designed for a niche crowd.

My daughter uses the Lux Clarinet Messenger PRO PAC Case (LX307). It's a clarinet case with messenger bag type room for music. Quite handy.

I'm thinking all go with the LUX Clarinet Messenger PRO PAC case. It's actually under my weight restriction of 10lbs, and has plenty of storage.

I'm traveling with my horn a lot more and have a bag full of music co I wanted something light for my instrument. I bought a small Buffet case (used for their plastic instruments) and bought a laptop bag. The case fits in the bag with lots of room to,spare, along with extra folders and books. The laptop bag also had, pockets, for, all my gear - my instrument stand, all my reed stuff, and much more. I really like it for light traveling.
