Pomarico are really good value for money and are very fine mouthpieces. I used to play a crystal model for a year or so, and then when I changed teachers I had to change mouthpeices because my teacher didnt like the weak sound of the crystal. I used to love playing the crystal, but not (as much as I still like them) I am glad I searched for other things and came across the ebony wood Pomarioco. It's really nice to play on and it's gotten my a long way. You'll find the the crystal model will probably give you a darker sound, but you will have trouble making a "big" sound on it. Also, I experienced alot of tuning trouble when using the Pomarico crystal. I think they are slightly shorter than other mouthpieces.

I play Pomarico crystal on bass clarinet, and both Pomarico crystal and wood mouthpieces on soprano clarinet. I like them a lot. I do my own refacing and almost never play an unmodified mouthpiece, but nevertheless I've found that the Pomaricos are closer to being right for me "out of the box" than most other brands I've tried.

Corey,

I've played some of Dave's stuff (brilliant work), so if he says they're good straight outta de box, that's a glowing recommendation.

Choose this carefully to match your reed!

I dislike crystal mouthpieces. Saliva sticks to the wall, which affects the tone
emission. Have you ever seen any clarinet player in major orchestras who uses one? I bought several but did not like any. IMHO.

Dear Hiroshi, I am so sad when I read messages as yours...I just want to let you know that Mr. Fabrizio Meloni ( 1st clarinet at Teatro alla Scala ) plays on both our mouthpieces (crystal and ebony wood), Giora Feidman (the King of the Klezmer) plays crystal mouthpieces on all his instruments ( Bb, Eb, Bass) and at the Clarinet fest in Ostenda Ricardo Morales (1st clarinet at Metropolitan N.Y.) took two crystal mouthpieces at my stand...and after all crystal is the most Hygienic material in the world because it isn't toxic...However, if you don't like crystal...don't play it...I hope Mark is agree...
Kind regards to everybody

I purchased a Pomarico crystal mpc recently, and I think it's great. I like it the best of my several mpcs. I recommend getting some on approval, and decide for yourself.

Mark agrees. If you look at major orchestras and at sole performers you'll find a wide variety of everything being used, and next year you might find a totally different set of things.

Michele Gingras, last time I saw her perform (ClarFest '99), was using a crystal mouthpiece. I *think* it was a Pomarico, but i could be wrong.

David Peck, principal of the Houston Symphony plays a refaced Mitchell Lurie crystal mouthpiece almost exclusively.

Personally, i prefer Kaspar's Chicago and Cicero mouthpieces. Crystal has never done much for me. I do have a very old Buffet crystal mouthpiece just as a novelty. Probablt from the 1910's. With Buffet Crampon engraved on the brass tenon cap.

To prevent the "Frazzing" sound treat the interior of the glass chamber with Rain-x or similar Hydrophobic coating.

My guess is that there is no more condensation inside the glass than any other mouthpiece... you may see more as through a magnifying lense.

The heat transfer characteristics should not be dramatically different, and the level of condensate is probable near the same.

C'mon, Pete Fountain plays one in the (arguably) most humid place in America, the Gulf coast of Louisiana.

He hasn't installed a spit valve.
