Some handy pedagogical tricks:

-Whisper exercise explained on this

improve tone quality and focus.

-Straw, pencil and "pingpong" exercises explained by Yehuda Gilad on this

-Hold a reed between tounge and roof of mouth to learn high tounge position.

Lets share more methods to put in our "toolbox"

The end of the note is just as important as the start, and duration.

Ah, Mr. Blumberg, that ending of each note is a particular personal struggle of mine as a chronic clarinet student. Can you say more about it?

I hear younger (or less experienced, but talented!!) players end notes without thinking about their ending at all, or not enough. So abrupt note endings occur. I know this, I DID this as a kid!

Think of shooting a basketball - you don't want to under, nor overshoot it.

Doesn't mean to play everything detached, or short, but it does mean to not chop off a note as the player is thinking about the next phrase - be sure to end notes gracefully.
