 Reeds?!! AAHH!!

Its not like you've seen this kind of post before...a clarinetist with reed issues!

I'm at Music College so doing intense playing on a daily basis. I have been using V12s (Strength 3) for a while but I am getting through them so quickly and as a student I just can't afford it! Also I haven't been as happy with the outcome from them lately!

I tried the Rue 56s as one of my teachers uses them on his Peter Eaton mouthpiece.

I am using a Peter Eaton Clarinet with a Peter Eaton Mouthpiece.

I found the 56 (Strength 3.5) too hard and the 56 (strength 3) too soft.

Does any one have any ideas what I could do to sort this out? Any suggestions are welcome!!

Thank you!

Have a look at the offerings from Legere and Forestone. Search this bb and you'll find lots of good info on them. Some people love them, some don't. I do.

Sometimes reeds that seem to die consistently too quickly are just too soft to begin with. Are you certain the #3-1/2 Rues are really too hard, or are they just not balanced? Are any of them comfortably resistant? Are all the #3 Rues too soft or only some of them? You will get some range in each box of reeds you buy. The manufacturers sometimes claim this is deliberate to accommodate players' different needs. It's probably more that the ways they measure strength aren't accurate enough to achieve uniformity for each strength.

FWIW, I find with 56 Rues that there's some overlap between adjacent strengths. My reed holder right now has a couple of #3-1/2+ and a couple of #4 56 Rues (as well as some others I'm experimenting with). Sometimes slightly different strengths work well in different acoustical or ensemble environments.

Since you clearly study with a clarinetist (more than one?) at school, what does he (do they) recommend you do?

Have you tried Rico Reserves or Reserve Classics? You could try buying a 3 and clipping it slightly. I've found that some reeds don't work very well after clipping and seem to need major adjustments. Not so with the Reserves.

You could also try Gonzalez Reeds (regular, FOF, or GD) which come in quarter strengths.
