Hello all you clarinet fanatics! I have a question for all of you. Ready? Who the heck is Jean Laserre, why is his name on my clarinet and where did these things come from !?! I recently bought a Jean Laserre clarinet at an antique store thinking it might be an investment since it was only $35.00. Now that i have it i would really really like to learn more about what i have exactly but am having a VERY hard time finding any info. I'd like to know anything you know such as how old it is, what its made out of etc. Thanks so much

There are two possibilities. Most likely you have what is called a "stencil clarinet". In the past it was common for some calrinet manufactures to produce unbranded instruments that could later have the name/brand of the purchaser stamped/stenciled on. During the first half of the last century there were literally hundreds of such stencil brands. Generally these were of lower quality than the instruments sold by the larger manufacturers but some can actually be decent playing instruments.
The other possibility is that you have a self-branded instrument from one of the very small manufacturers that existed prior to the second world war. At one time there were many small manufacturers clustered around the areas where the larger manufacturers were located. It has been said that dozens of such manufacturers once existed in the La Couture region in France.
Unfortunately the value of the instrument will be very low regardless of whether it is a stencil instrument or if it just came from a very small manufacturer.Sadly there is little interest in older instruments that were not made by the major manufacturers.

thanks for the info! I really could not understand why I couldnt find any info on it. I think it does have the potential to be a really nice clarinet with a little TLC. The body is absolutely gorgeous with the wood. The keys are a bit dingy but that can be overlooked :p Thanks again for the reply!

Ashley, I have an entire china cabinet full of old clarinets with potential, many of them just like yours (though with a variety of names), and they're all worth maybe 30 bucks each, on a good day. Sorry, but there's no lack of old, neglected off-brand clarinets in the world. And like the ugly puppy at the back of the county animal shelter, nobody wants them.
