So it seems that in the midst of all the insane minutiae we discuss on this board, the newest music for the clarinet has been lost...well, maybe not but I thought it'd be informative and fun to go through the newest clarinet concertos that have been written in the past couple of years...so without further ado:
2013 (yet to be premiered - keep an ear out!):
Michael Gandolfi - new concerto for the Atlanta Symphony principal, Laura Ardan.
Bent Sørenson - Martin Fröst will be playing this next season with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra
Tomas Svoboda - new work being premiered with the Eugene Symphony played by their principal, Michael Anderson. He's their resident composer.
2012 (I believe all of these have already been premiered):
James David - Auto '66, a concerto for clarinet and wind ensemble premiered by Wesley Ferriera and the Colorado State University Wind Ensemble
John Hedges - Victoria Luperi premiered this new work, Fantasia Sombre Yma Sumac, with the Fort Worth Symphony (TX)
Misha Mullov-Abbado - Played by the Cambridge Symphonic Players (UK) and clarinetist Joe Shiner.
Tony Osborne - Helen Paskins premiered this with the University of Reading (UK) Symphony Orchestra.
2011 (hang on, there's a bunch):
George Tsontakis - Premiered by David Krakauer with the Albany Symphony - a Klezmer concerto
Martin Rokeach - Just found this one - premiered by the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra with clarinetist Diane Maltester
Kevin Walczyk - a concerto with wind ensemble, premiered by Joseph LeBlanc (US Marine Band) and the West Chester University Wind Ensemble
Paquito d'Rivera - a great composer, wrote this "Cape Cod Concerto" for Jon Manasse with the Symphony Silicon Valley
Mohammed Fairouz - entitled "Tahrir" and premiered by David Krakauer with Ensemble 212 of New York City
Alissa Firsova - "Freedom" premiered by the Northwest Sinfonietta and Laurie de Luca on clarinet
Ivor Hodgson - Written for John Bradbury and premiered by him and the Bolton Symphony Orchestra (UK)
Christian Jost - Eerily titled "Heart of Darkness" received premier by Robert Plane and the Dortmund Philharmonic (Germany)
Andy Keenan - Right before the 2012 new year, on Dec. 11, premiered by Linda Merrick and the Birmingham Symphony Winds (UK)
Lyudmila Kise - Written as a thesis, premiered at the New Music Festival in Chisinau, Moldova by David Barrientos and the National Broadcasting Orchestra Teleradio Moldova
Fazil Say - premiered by Sabine Meyer and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (Turkey)
James Stephenson - Premiered by Daniel Gilbert and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra in Cleveland, Ohio. Score is available on composer's website.
Harvey Stokes - Premiered by Nikolasa Tejero and the UT-Chattanooga Symphony.
Joseph Vella - Premiered by Godfrey Mifsud and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
Shen Yiwen - A charming, young Chinese composer currently studying at Juilliard under Adler, wrote a nice piece for Wang Tao and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra
Roger Zare - premiered as "Bennu's Fire" and the CSU Northridge Wind Ensemble with soloist Alexander Fiterstein.
I hope others find this interesting and, more importantly, encouraging that there is still great music being written for our medium!!! I have recorded 15 new concertos in 2010 and 10 in 2009 as well.
