Hey everyone,
As the title of this thread suggests, I'll be heading out to Vienna (in about 24hours time). Does anyone have any recommendations for places to go stuff to visit shops to patronize and all? Between a Master class I'm attending I might have an afternoon or two free.

I went to Vienna a few years back, and absolutely loved the city! There is so much to see, but the highlights of my trip included visting the Collection of Ancient Instruments at the New Imperial Palace, as well as the Kunsthistorishces Museum and don't forget the Stephansdom (you can even take a crypt tour, which was really interesting!)

A music related idea:
Doblinger is a music publisher from Austria. They publish a lot of the Jettle books as well as having other music as well. It is worth a stop

Visit the Haus der Musik, near the Opera and within the Ringstrasse. It has interesting exhibits on major composers, batons of various conductors, and even an interactive exhibit where you can attempt to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Radetzky March. Despite my having conducted some, the orchestra refused to play for me! Could the players have sat stone faced and contemptuous because I was not wearing tails?

There's a smoky little bar called Das Haus Celeste that has free jazz jam sessions Monday nights at 10pm if you're into that. (at least, they were Mondays at 10 back in February. Don't know if they're still at it).

Technically underage though (16) so the club might not be legally speaking a very viable option....

Vienna is an amazing city, and you certainly can't go wrong with any of the recommendations you've received. (and 16 may be old enough to get into that smoky bar.)
Salzburg, about 2 hours by train, isn't too shabby a place to visit either; if only for the novel attraction of visiting Mozart's birthplace. Obviously this would take up the better part of a day so it may not fit into your schedule.

Vienna is an amazing city; I love spending time there! I just returned from the city about a month ago.
Definitely visit Doblinger on Dortheergasse and make sure to visit Cafe Hewelka next door for some fantastic coffee. The Haus der Musik is a must as well.
I attended a phenomenal ballet performance at the Volksoper of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Carmina Burana. This was truly one of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed and I can't recommend it enough. I think the show runs through September, or perhaps does not begin again until September. I can't seem to recall, but it is worth looking into. I paid 10 Euros for my "obstructed view" seat.
I would also suggest trying to see a performance at the Staatsoper. You can acquire a standing-room ticket to an opera for 3 Euros or an obstructed view ticket for around 10-15.

In addition to all of the above; Schoenbrunn (the old summer palace), The Belvedere (Klimts are must see), Hofburg (the intown palace), Theater an der Wien, Cafe Sperrl, Das Griechenbeissl (very old eatery home of a figure claimed to be the original "Liebe Augustin") for shopping Mariahilfestrasse...

You must go to the cemetery! All of the musicians/composers are in the same section. Beethoven, Strauss, Schoenberg, Mozart (the memorial anyway), even Muhlfeld is there - very interesting. Also, go to the cafe Sacher and have a Sacher torte!
