I ended my search for a newer clarinet today. I purchased a Yamaha CSV in very nice condition. The sound was a bit brighter than some of the other instruments I tried and the resistance a shade more than some of the older R-13's but overall intonation, and ease was still there. For what I paid and in the pristine condition, I think it was a good safe and reliable instrument. I paid $1,150.00 and it came with a newer Protec case which is not my idea of a classy way of transport. I guess people prefer the protection of the big Protec case and the ease of being able to tote around extra mouthpieces and music in one knock around package. Today I begin my new relationship with my new family member. Thank you to all who helped me over the last 6 months with the many problems I had in fixing an older horn, getting my embrasure back and feeding me invaluable information to help me on my way.

Included with my used CSV Yamaha clarinet was a virtually or possibly unused Yamaha 4CM mouthpiece. The previous owner perhaps used another mouthpiece after trying the 4CM and deciding not to use it. If the CSV clarinet has any deficiency it is that it seems a touch less warm than the better versions of the R-13. My preffered mouthpiece has been a Vandoren B45 or 46. I decided to try the Yamaha 4CM. Strangely, the B46 and the 4CM are not that different, but one thing that did stand out is that the Yamaha 4CM mouthpiece brought out an additional woodiness and warmth with the clarinet it was intended for.
Now the Yamaha 4C and the 4CM are indeed different mouthpieces. For one thing, the 4CM is made of ebonite and not plastic like the 4C. I was surprised that the 4CM is so underappreciated and so unextolled. It seems like a very good mouthpiece and although I don't know the dimensional differences between it and the B45, it seems like it might be in the same ballpark in terms of type, quality, and it's cheaper to boot. At least in this one case, it has all the obvious good qualities of a popular B45 with the additional advantage of being warmer and more honey-like. Maybe it deserves a 2nd look from others too.
