 Older Vandoren blue box?
Author: Bill

Any ideas about where to go to get older VD blue box (regular) reeds? Not the 70s purple plastic boxes (although I would love to have those), but just boxes from, say, 6-7 years ago.

You might try dealers who sell used clarinets. Very often, used instruments come with all sorts of stuff in the cases -- and you and I know how clarinet players accumulate reeds. Dealers might be happy to sell you a box of "new old stock" reeds. If you're a regular at yard sales and flea markets, check the clarinets for sale there, too. Flea market dealers are usually delighted to barter and most of them either understand that the reeds aren't part of the clarinet (that selling the reeds isn't like breaking up the clarinet by selling the barrel, for instance) or else they don't know but they don't give a squeak, either.

I'm assuming you've already tried Washington Music Center, Foxes, and Dales. Perhaps try Presto Brass & Woodwinds? They have a bunch of older stuff lying around.

Thank you! I got 2 boxes from eBay from a seller who used a photo of the old box, but, alas, it was the newer iteration.

Who would have thought, after 17 years of playing and buying V12s and the Argentine stuff and the Gonzalez that I would end up preferring the good old VD regulars? Chicken soup.

Have you tried UK ebay?
I have seen occasional adverts where they state that the reeds are in sealed boxes but of the old style box.
Only recently I bought some Bass clarinet reeds in those older boxes.

Fortunately I purchased many soprano reeds well in advance! still have some of those older purple plastic boxes from the 70s bought when I made regular business trips to Paris (and back then reeds were much cheaper there than in the UK).

p.s. I should have mentioned widening the search to other ebay countries, about 6 months back I bought 3 "old style" boxes of VD bass clar reeds from Germany at a very good price.
