Hello -
I was looking through the new WW&BW catalogue, and i wondered why they list flutes as professional, yet under clarinets they list them as advanced ~not professional. Why ? Is there a difference ? My R13 - Is that a professional instrument or just an advanced one ? huh ?!

It's a professional. There was a time that Buffet's top of the line was the r-13. In a way it still is. The fancier models are silver plated, have tenon protectors etc. The Prestige is allegedy made out of the "finest core grenedilla"., whatever that means. It's all a marketing thing.
You've got a fine instrument. I just got a new one; my fifth.
One could also opt for extra keys or a full Boehm. They're heavier. Flutes are also much more expensive at the top of the line. In fact, I don't know any professional quality wind instrument priced as low as than the clarinet.

Too confusing for me I'm afraid. Although the official classification of the R-13 is "Professional", though I gave up understanding why, sometime in the last Millennium.

I think that the reason why some call some flutes "professional", is because a "professional" flute is so expensive (a good one = ~ 12'000 $) and that no advanced flutist really can afford such an instrument.
Professional clarinets such are the R13 cost only ~ 2000 $. At that price any clarinetist can buy one.
