This post is only intended to help beginners like myself but the above program is an extremely powerful composing tool. However they let you download a free version with limited capabilities. With this free version you can input notes on a virtual piano keyboard and they appear on a written score and play back if desired. Where I have found this useful is with a new piece of music where there might be a bar or two with, say, eighth notes, some dotted, interspersed with sixteenth note rests etc. where I just can't get the hang of the rhythm/cadence/tempo (you pick the right word).
I input these bars, play back on a loop and just listen until it has sunk in to my thick head...it's been a boon to me. The default playback speed is funereal so it has to be adjusted on each switch on
