My crystal mps had smooth baffle surfaces, but many of my hard rubber ones did not. Therefore one day I took a wad of 0000 steel wool and with the aid of an erasor on a pencil, rubbed the baffle, on an old m13, until it was smooth. I could not detect any difference in its response. Should baffle surfaces be smoothly finished, or does it matter?

My guess is that it doesn't matter. Many custom workers will gauge away until they get the response they want, leaving a very odd looking trail of asymmetrical grooves leading into the bore.

I've refaced hundreds of mouthpieces and have not found any difference between rough and smooth baffles.

You can contact me off line. It's a topic that requires the understanding of other areas of mouthpieces. In my opinion understanding the baffle and the chamber is like a puzzle. The other parts of the puzzle have to fit such as the baffle and the chamber.
After reading the other posts I feel David is right on track and you may wish to contact him as well; if it's ok with him. He surely understands MP's.
