When Should I Not Use WD-40?

This picture was part of the above-mentioned article (someone wrecked a clarinet using WD-40 on it). The instruments in the picture don't look like any clarinets I've ever seen. Can anyone identify them? I tried doing multiple searches, but came up empty.

Looks to me like a clarinet and oboe got married and these are the kids they had. :-)

The right thumb key turns the rotary valve at the top to switch it from one side to the other. I bet it weighs a ton!

HAHAHA! I wondered that too - will both sides play at the same time or will one side have dominance over the other, or will it just not work at all?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter_tone_clarinet and http://anticwindbooks.chez-alice.fr/clarinet/clar14/clar14.html. From the Wikipedia photos, you shift from one side to the other with the right-hand thumb key.

You'll need a small crane to hold the thing, and heaven help the repair tech who tries to regulate it.
