Over on BBC Radio you can listen to an interesting new arrangement:
Agnieszka Duczmal arr. of Clarinet Quintet in A major (K.581) arranged for clarinet and string orchestra Wojciech Mrozek (clarinet), The Amadeus Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra in Poznan, Agnieszka Duczmal (conductor)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01bztxh/Through_the_Night_25_02_2012/
just move the time indicator to about 2.31 (ie two and a half hours into the programme)

VERY interesting. There's almost no alteration, but it works entirely differently from the original. Great music, but not really Mozart. The chamber music character -- the integration of the string parts together and with the clarinet -- is almost completely lost. The first trio of III, for example, is pure orchestral tutti rather than chamber music, with the first violins playing straight rather than sliding around rhaposdically as in the quintet. IV is very soloistic, losing for example the amazing interplay in the first variation, with the quartet playing strongly and the clarinet weaving a gossamer spider's web of descant around it.
Mrozak is a spectacular player. He has a lot of things on YouTube <Wojciech Mrozek>, including the complete Mozart Quintet, which is entirely different from the orchestral version, working like we expect it to.
He also has other types of music up, including excellent Turkish music on a metal clarinet in G. I've bookmarked him and will be listening to everything over the next few days.

I totally enjoyed listening to this -- lovely playing on all hands. I have a feeling that if Mozart had originally written it for this configuration we would be critical if someone had arranged it down to a quintet. To be sure, it's not exactly chamber music this way, but it has other compensations that I don't always realize from the original. And how many orchestra players haven't experienced a conductor who exhorts us to "play it like chamber music!"

I wonder if this arrangement is published? Someone was recently (as I write this) looking for a clarinet-and-string-orchestra piece.

When I tried to follow the link, it was listed as not available. Does anyone know of another link to this arrangement. I'm curious to hear it.

I think the BBC iPlayer only makes broadcasts available for 7 days after the initial performance.
If I recall this was put out on 25 Feb so has probably just been taken down.
I don't think there is any way now to get it from BBC but perhaps someone may have uploaded to utube (not sure if that's legal but doesn't stop everyone).
