 HELP!!! I'm "clarinet"-ically fustrated!!!!

Hi everyone!! So I have some clarinet issues that y'all can hopefully help me with! I'm about to go to my first year of college and I feel like I'm not as "well prepared" as I should be. Even though I've made the all state band and my regional bands I feel like I could/should be so much better by now. I guess what I am trying to say is does anyone have any practicing advice? Because aparently my practicing methods aren't making me better, but just fustrated. I pretty much need the most help with tounging & technique ( fingering) those are my weak points. Tone wise I'm pretty good except my throat tones are still a little airy and I would like to perfect my tone overall. Thanks for helping!! :)

Can you describe what your normal practice routine consists of? What books are you using, how much time are you putting in. That might give someone a better idea of where you are and how to get where you want to go.

Do you have a private teacher? A teacher can help you better than a bunch of who-knows-what on a discussion board, with the benefit of actually hearing you play...

For me the fundamentals are ALWAYS worth stressing. That is, you should have a good routine of slow scales (running, thirds, interrupted) using a tuner (with the SOUND function) and a metronome. In addition the Kroepsch exercises (they can be found incorporated into the Lazarus books, Klose books or separately) are great to put that work into a practical context in that they emphasize technique within each tonality in a very concentrated way.

I am always (and I mean always) surprised going back to various mainstays of the repertoire just how much easier the get over the years just by emphasizing the very basics.

Hello pollymichie - a while back I put together some blogs and videos about practicing and technique issues. I have pretty much dropped the project, but some of them might be helpful to you in some way. http://onlinemusicteacher.blogspot.com/

Thanks guys for all the helpful responses!! My usual practice schedule mainly consists of mainly running the 12 major scales & drilling myself on hard spots in music for school and stuff. It never really occurrd to me that even though I was an all stater I was lacking technically and that's why I must not be getting any better and fustrated. I do have a a person I work with privatly, but we work kind of inconsistantly. I usually only work with him when I need help with music. I usually play for my directors and they help me also.
