I know this subject has been discussed before, but I just came across a new app for iPhone/iPad that I think deserves its own thread. It's called Tonal Energy Tuner:
http://tonalenergy.com/
What I like about it is the ability for it to tune and give reference tones in both just and equal temperament, and also it has different "ability" levels. For example, the intermediate level indicates a note is "in tune" if it is within 3 cents, but the "pro" level, the note has to be within 1 cent. There are also some other unique features with waveforms, where you can see how smooth your crescendos are, etc., but I haven't fully explored those yet. My band students (high school age) seem to really like it - I project it up on a big screen and we use it to show the difference between just and equal tuning. I am also a big fan of the petersen iStobosoft, but I must say I like this app a bit better overall - largely because of the reference tones. I think the app is only a couple of bucks right now.
I am not affiliated in any way with the makers or distributers of the app, and I have no finacial stake in it at all. I just wanted to share - I think it's the best thing to come along in a while!
