 Eb barrels
Author: Aaron

I play on a Selmer Eb from the mid to early 70's(exact year not konwn). Well as usual the things more times than not plays sharp. The horn has been overhauled a year agao, and plays wonderfully, it's just too sharp! I have to play with the barrell at least 3 to 4 mm out, too much for me and the joint isn't stable then, a little wobbelly.
I would like to try a buffet barrel on the horn. However, the bore sizes are different between the two horns. Buffet o think is smaller then Selmer, or vice versa.
In working with my teacher who played Eb for the St. Louis Sym, and plays Bas for them now. He said that when Bob Coleman was playing Eb with the orchestra he played a Selmer similar to mine. (Bob isn't playing much anymore with the orchestra because of a stroke) He said the Bob used a Springer barrell(thats what I rememebr him saying the maker was). I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get one of these Barrels, or a number, person to call.
Also any other suggestions as to different barrels to try would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Aaron

Sometimes a different mouthpiece can cure the sharpness.

Aaron -

Early 70's Selmers Ebs are in high demand. They have a reputation of being some of the best Ebs ever made.

I don't think Springer barrels are made any more. However, I'm sure Eb barrels are available from Fobes, Pyne and others.

Many years ago, I played Eb (a Leblanc) in the University of Tennessee band and the Knoxville Symphony. It had the same sharpness problem as your Selmer. I went to a hardware store and got two rubber washers that fit into the ends of garden hoses, plus some medium coarse sandpaper. Then I sanded down the outside of each washer so one would fit in the top barrel socket and one in the bottom. Then I wrapped the sandpaper around a round stick (you could use a round ballpoint pen) and rolled it back and forth on the inside of each washer until it matched the bore size. It took about an hour, but it was cheap and it worked. It's certainly worth trying before laying out money for a new barrel.

Good luck.

Lee Springer is deceased and his barrels are no longer available. I use a shortened Chadash barrel on my Eb and it works very well. Good luck.

I asked Fobes a year or two ago if he still made Eb barrels and he said no. He made a few batches a couple of times but there just wasn't enough demand for them for him to keep making them. Which is a pitty, because i would have loved a matching barrel to go with my Bb and A barrels.

I bought a 41.5mm for my plastic Bundy Eefer from Robert Scott. I am very pleased with my setup (my mouthpiece is the Hite). The cost of the Scott synthetic barrel was $40.00. Mr. Scott has Eb barrels available in sizes from 41mm to 43mm. He acknowledged that his Eb Barrels were direcetd at the Buffet R-13 Eefer, but then he *knew* the 41.5mm would work with (my) Bundy. Good luck. mw
