 Mysterious Vandoren Mouthpiece
Author: LJBraaten

I just got an old Vandoren 5V+ (not a 5RV). It appears to have been refaced. It is very open, and would not even make a sound with 3.25 Gonzalez reed. I found a Rico 2.0 [edit] in my misc. reed box, & with this it plays reasonably well -- but I'll need to break it in before I can make any judgments.

Does anyone know anything about this series? I couldn't find a single reference to it anywhere.

You can send your question to the Vandoren company via email. I got my answer in 2 days as I remember when I had questions about their discontinued V360 line. I just checked the copy of a catalog from 1983 and I didn't see the 5V+. Maybe it's an earlier model or a prototype.

Well, I'm no longer interested in the mouthpiece since it is unplayable and I'm returning it to the seller. When it was refaced it was opened up too much, the second time I tried it, it barely made a peep with the size 2 reed. After I posed the question I've noticed a number of discontinued Vandorens on the auction circuit; 2RV, 3V, etc. are any of these or other discontinued Vandorens worth having?

I have a 2RV that sounds pretty good with Vandoren 2.5's. On one of my clarinets (B & H) it plays very well, but not so well on my Selmer Soloist.

The 2RV is exactly same as the 5RV and as such was/still a popular mouthpiece.
I have a 2V which I bought about 40 years ago and a slightly later 3V both of which are IMO good mouthpieces.
I think the xV series went out of production many years ago but no reason not to try them if they come up.
