I've probably said this before, but to recap: next friday (Feb. 16) I'm audition for the clarinet studio at the University of Iowa, on clarinet and bass clarinet (mostly bass). My piece for bass is cake, i've been playing it since like 1999, and i'm playing the Adagio of the Mozart clarinet concerto for my Bb piece. Its coming together and i'm getting a good sound now (now that i switched to vandorens), but i dont really know what to do w/ the cadenza... speed up then slow down, crescendo, i dunno... what have you all had good results with? I have a lesson tomorrow so I'll get some help, but i'd really like some more input. thanx!!!!

Jsut do what you think sounds right and feels right, when I play cadenzas, I rarely ever play it exactly the same way. Make it up, improve. Good Luck!!

You might want to look up eingang rather than cadenza for the Mozart (that's what it really is, and it's been discussed under that name too). Also check http://www.ocr.sneezy.org - I think there's some things written by Dan Leeson on the eingang there.

Ashley -
The Mozart Concerto was written for A clarinet. If you play it on Bb clarinet, you will lose points. Borrow an A clarinet if you possibly can.
A couple of months ago, there was a good thread on the slow movement cadenza, to which I contributed, at http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=33063&t=32991, Please read that and come back with any questions.
Good luck on your audition.

For a college audition, I don't know if it is truely detrimental to play the Mozart on a Bb, specifically if the piece was on a suggested list of audition materials for the Bb. I seem to remember your posting from before, but remind me. Didn't your contact at the University of Iowa suggest this piece for you?
Anyhow, if you are doing your general audition for admission to the music program, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do decide to audition specifically for an orchestra, I would do it on an A. (But from what I remember, your favorite gig is bass anyway, right?)
Just my humble opinion (with about five years of college auditioning behind it).

If you play the Mozart on a Bb during a college audition to a "name" college, you will almost certainly be "dinged" - by that time the college will have expectations that you own an A clarinet since you're a serious student.

Thanx for the opinions
It wouldn't be possible for me to play it on an A clarinet, my school doesnt have one (we have no need for one, we dont even own an Eb clarinet; come to think of it I dont think i've ever even seen an A clarinet other than pictures..), anyway I'm not auditioning for an ensemble, just for general admission to the school of music. I dont think the professor will kill me if I play it on Bb. She didnt suggest the piece for me, I called and talked to her maybe a month ago, and she was really nice. She doesnt have a list of pieces you have to pick from for an audition, she just asked me what I was going to play. When I talked to her, I had different pieces picked out for both Bb and bass.. my private teacher decided that the Bb piece I picked was too "ambitious" to prepare in a month, and I just didnt like the bass one too much. So now that my audition materials have changed, I have to write and tell her that (I'll do it tonight, I promise! i've been putting it off for about a week). I'm just hoping that she'll forgive my soprano audition after I play bass for her a little.. and that she lets me do scales on bass because that's what i'm used to (and that i can play chromatic on bass, if i play it on Bb i can only get up to a G, if i play it on bass i can get to the C above that) Anyway thanx for the input, and I'm off to practice.....

(My very VERY last pep band EVER in my high school career is tonight.. I'm sad =..(

..."just" auditioning for general admission to the school of music...
Even if the professor is really nice, wouldn't you be giving yourself a better chance by borrowing your teacher's "A" for the next ten days?
good luck - a few deep breaths!! - deebee

I have absolutely no access to an A clarinet whatsoever.. my teacher sold hers as she doesnt need it anymore. unfortunately.

Huh? sorry, maybe i'm a little slow today, but that completely confused me...
-----------------
Excuse me while I go INSANE - I havent had a clarinet lesson in probably 2 or 3 weeks, my audition is a week from tomorrow. And of course, living in iowa, we got this lovely freezing rain stuff that cancelled school today when i was supposed to have a lesson. If school's cancelled tomorrow (we're supposed to get 6" of snow tonight), i'll have no guidance to go by when i practice this weekend, not to mention that we probably wont go to the jazz band contest we're planning to go to saturday, as its 3 hours away. If we go, we wont have practiced in 3 days.. this could be detrimental to our getting to state if we do badly......this is baaaaad......
thanx for letting me vent : )

Hi Ashley:
I was just reading all of the replies for your question-I am not sure how much any of them helped considering the cadenza, except for the one that said play what feels right. That is what's most important. Turning to your teacher for a little guidance was the right thing to do, but don't forget to add your own touch. If you don't use some of your own interpretation then the music will lose some of the feeling and meaning.
As for the Bb/A controversy, I just called a friend of mine who actually went to Iowa for his undergrad, though his primary instrument is saxophone, his secondary is clarinet, and he said to inform you that no major points will be deducted for playing it on B Flat. From my own personal experience, most college professors understand that being a senior in highschool you may not have experience on an A, especially if your school doesn't have an orchestra.
Then of course there is the nerves issue! you have probably heard this a million times, BUT, I am going to say it anyways! Relax. I know this sounds corny, but do some deep breathing excercises right before you go in....it really does help. since you are auditioning for admission to a college music department, I am going to assume that you really like to play, think about that when you go for the audition-you are dioing something you love to do. Just have fun making music, I think as performers that is something we forget too often. Best wishes for a musical future!!
Kelly
