Two Questions: One About Board and the Other About Wrist
Author: Claire Annette
Date:   2011-11-03 18:23

First question:

Why does this board appear "normal" on my computer but expanded (showing every response to every thread) on my android phone? I'm wondering if I mistakenly pushed a button that changed the format. If this makes no sense...nevermind.

Second question:

Why is the distal part of my left wrist hurting badly after I play? I have osteoarthritis in my knees and hips. Could it be affecting my wrist as well? Until very recently, my wrist hasn't bothered me in this spot after playing.

To better describe the area that's hurting: If the letter Y represents my left hand, palm facing me and the "v" portion of the Y represents my entire palm, the area where the "v" connects to the stem is where the pain is, on the outside edge...just slightly to the inside.

My hand and finger positions have not changed at all. If anything, I play more relaxed now than I did in my teens and early adult years. I pray this isn't carpal tunnel. Would wrapping an Ace bandage around the wrist help while I play? Ice helps alleviate the pain a little and I'm taking extra-strength Tylenol just over an hour before a 1.5-hour rehearsal.

If anyone has experienced or is experiencing the same thing, I'd welcome your feedback.

In order to not show all of the responses at once you need to switch from "flat view" to "threaded view". Click on the 3rd link from the left just below the message window (between "Avail. Forums" and "Log Out")

Not sure what to do about your wrist issue unfortunately as I haven't experienced anything similar.

Thanks for the tip about the view, Steve.

Is your wrist pain on the forearm side or the top side? I have pain on the top side where my left wrist connects to my hand. My doctor recently told me that I have a ganglion cyst there (it really sticks out if I bend my wrist). She said it's too small to drain as it is right now. She said it may get bigger, smaller, or just hang out there. She also surgery is an option, but there's no way I'm letting someone cut into my wrist for something that's non life threatening (and that may come back anyway). It's possible that a ganglion cyst will appear on the forearm side, but I think the outside is more common. I've also heard it's more common for females (tell that to my brother who has one in his wrist as well).

If anyone else has experienced this, any words of wisdom? Ice sometimes helps, but not always. I'm considering getting a support glove for that hand/wrist (then I'd have a matching set!), but I've read that splinting doesn't help. This wouldn't be quite the same as splinting, so I may try it.

Claire -

You need to see a physical therapist who specializes in the problems of musicians. Often a small change in hand position can cure the problem, but severe cases can require the relocation of a key.

You can check your left hand position in two ways. First, hold the lower joint out in front of your body in your right fist and then reach out and "shake hands" with the upper joint, keeping your wrist straight. You can also lay the clarinet on the floor facing away from you, reed up, and then bend over and pick it up.

In either case, your elbows should be down, pointed to the ground, and your shoulders should be relaxed.

Rachel -

I've had a ganglion the size of a large pea on top of my left hand most of my life. I had it examined by an orthopedist, who told me that there's no reason to do anything about it unless it's painful. Like Claire you should see a physical therapist for any pain.

Be thankful that this isn't 100 years ago. Back then, the "treatment" was to lay your hand (palm down) on the dining room table and have someone slam the family bible down on it to burst it.

Claire Anette,
Is the pain exacerbated when you rotate your wrist during playing? as when playing throat G#?

If so, building up the key could help to minimize the motion. I have done so, albeit out of a pragmatic issue- I have quite long fingers- not a medical one. At first I simply used some hard cork which I shaped and glued on the key. It worked well, but I couldn't "slide" off the key as needed, so eventually I a cut and shaped a G# key from a "donor" clarinet and affixed it.
I may be shooting in the dark on this matter, and you needn't go to the lengths I did, but it's something to consider that won't cause any undue harm.

Ken,
Quite a vengeful god, no!?

I talked to my doc today about it (had my annual physical). She said the same thing she did last time (too small to drain/inject). There's no way I'm letting a hand surgeon near me. It does hurt, but not enough to risk having someone cut into me (I have lingering problems from past surgeries in other places and don't need more).

I've heard about the Bible thing. Um, no thanks. ;)

A point of clarification: the pain doesn't occur while I'm playing. I'm only aware of it afterwards--maybe an hour or more after I've stopped.

Have you tried some post playing loosening exercises?

Maybe some gentle flexing/extending and wrist rotations? Quite often people warm up but don't warm down afterwards. My other indulgence is Japanese Taiko Drumming, and if I don't warm down properly after that, then I can barely walk the next day!
