Almost way cool! I'm glad Leblanc is letting people play this monster again.

Now if only it had been recorded with a microphone & electronics with better bass response! Even when I plug in my studio headphones, the audio track keeps dissolving into a toneless growl.

Of course, the only time I got to try out a low-C contra-alto, I found it hard to make the very lowest notes sound completely musical. Maybe making the octo-contralto speak properly demands a mouthpiece too big to get into a human mouth. Or maybe it's just my ears and it sounds fine to elephants.

On any contra or sub contra instrument, for the lowest notes to be distinguishable as a definitive pitch rather than a buzz or rattle, it's probably best to have them doubled up the 8ve with another low instrument - in this case another low clarinet.

But it's still good to hear both the extreme instruments (although not the extreme extreme as there's still the BBBb octo-contrabass) together in the same setting.

I havn't played the Ab picc since college--"Clarinet Polka" on tour with our Concert Band. It always brought smiles & some questions, like "what is that little thingie?" This duo took me on a trip down memory lane and brought a smile to my face--thx JM for the posting.

There should be much, much more of this sort of thing.

They should be commissioned by youtube to perform a transcription of the entire ballet--all performed in that same shop, but in different seasons.

And then have it danced by trained animals.

Around the 1:50 mark I think you can see an left hand Eb lever on the Ab clarinet -- now that's truly ridiculous!!

I think some of the Italian makers also managed to cram in articulated G# and forked Bb mechanisms on them as well!

To quote the local PBS classical music announcer when he saw this:

"Saints preserve us. This is wrong -- on so many levels."

I want a full-Boehm A-flat clarinet! That way, I could get down to eek-flat.

It's also an Ab lever which makes more sense :)
