 Vintage LeBlanc 7 ring model?
Author: vishnucleus

I recently bought a vintage pro LeBlanc clarinet from 1974 but I don't know what the model is called. It's discontinued and I'd like to find out more information about it but I can't seem to figure out what model it is even though I've spent some time googling it... It has seven rings and it has an art. C# key (I think that's what it's called). It also has an extra banana key underneath the F. If anyone has any information on this model it would be greatly appreciated!

On Leblanc clarinets the model is often listed on the upper joint just above the Leblanc logo. What you have is an either an "enhanced boehm" or a "full boehm" depending on whether it has a low e-flat key or not. I have any "enhanced boehm" Selmer CT that is my current favorite clarinet. It takes a little while to get used to the 7th ring and the articulated C# if you aren't used to having them.

If you post some pictures of the clarinet as well as the serial number we can help you narrow down what model it is. Also check out the Leblanc page on Steve Sklar's site and compare your instrument against the ones pictured there.

Well since I'm practicing at the moment I just took a quick picture on my webcam. It's not really the best quality but you can see what I meant by the art. C# and the extra ring. The serial number is 40269. Thanks so much for the help!

Oh, and above the logo it has a cursive L. You can't see it in the picture because you can hardly see it on the clarinet by itself. There might be something on both sides of the L but I can't really tell. It might be a 7 and 0?

That's definitely an "enhanced boehm" with all of the extra keys except for the alternate G# key for the left little finger. It's pretty much the same setup I have on my Centered Tone.

My guess would be that this is an L-series Leblanc as these were made in the time period the serial number indicates. If you look just above the Leblanc logo on the upper joint there should be either a pearl inset with an L and numbers (eg. L7, L27) or an engraved "script L" with numbers (eg. L70, L200). It could also be a Leblanc LL, which has a symbol of two script L's in a mirror image creating a shape the kind of looks like a bell.

Regardless, these are all good clarinets.

Thinking that this might be an LL model, I quickly searched Google for "Leblanc LL", and found several posts from this very BB!

Here's just 1, that shows a few configurations: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/download.html?1,870/Leblanc%20LL%20special.pdf

Sound like you have an L70. It should look similar to this: http://www.clarinetperfection.com/galleryclar/Leblanc/Leblanc_L70/cl01.jpg
