 Eastern music

Hello--

I am looking for music that is from the regions of the Middle East and India to transcribe, possibly for a recital. I really love ragas in particular and would love to do a piece with a tabla player. If anyone has any music or particular places, websites, etc. to offer I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

There was a piece called "Raga Music" written for solo clarinet in the 1950s by a composer named John Mayer. It's pretty cool and rather tricky but you might look into it to complement the "traditional" stuff.

Dunno how much time you want to invest, but if you're up to learn a bit of Indian theory and have someone who can teach you sargam (Indian solfege) and how to navigate a piece written in such, then you'll find plenty of pieces in an Indian music textbook. "The Classical Music of North India" by Ali Akbar Khan, is the one I have.

Katrina -- thank you for the suggestion. I have actually heard of that before, but had forgotten about it.

EEBaum -- thank you as well! That book sounds awesome and I will definitely look into it. Have you transcribed any of the pieces in there?

Never bothered. Transcription is not necessary once you know how to read the sargam (Indian solfege) and understand how the rhythmic structure works.

I took a class where we would show up every Tuesday with our instruments and sight read a piece or two from the book. First couple weeks we learned to read it, then we were golden.

LOL! Then, 40 years later, you realize that you're acceptable in one style of Indian music.
