1st and 2nd clarinet chairs auditions for the Icelandic Symphony
Author: Iceland clarinet

If anyone is interested I saw that the audition for 1st solo clarinet will be 23rd November and hiring will be from beginning of season 2012-2013 application is until 23rd October.

2nd clarinet and Eflat is also auditioning 25th January and application is until 23rd December and hiring will be as soon as possible.

The Icelandic Symphony is 61 year old and it has been getting great reviews in the past and got some fantastic reviews on their Naxos recordings of Sibelius symphonies and orchestral works conducted by Peter Sakari. The orchestra moved to a brand new concerthall at the harbor in Reykjavík last May. It's called Harpa and the acoustic is fabulous(I've played a concert there in the main hall just over a week after the opening concert with the orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy). Playing is so effortless it's like you can just sigh in your clarinet and it gets all the way to the back of this 1600 seat main hall. I played extreamly softly the solo in Suppe's Light Calvary overture and I was told it was heard all over the hall.

More informations about the hall are at http://www.harpa.is and for the Symphony orchestra at http://www.sinfonia.is/english

You can also contact the staff manager at kristin@sinfonia.is for more information about the audition. Sorry I didn't see any information about it in English on their site.

Went to Iceland on an Air Force band tour. It was in the summer time. The sun never went down. Kind of cool. The sad part is in the winter the sun never comes up!

Why both positions open, just a coincidence?

I'm not really sure but I think it's around 2500$ a month

But you have to take into account that you don't need to buy insurance for health care and such stuff like in USA and this is around what majority of Icelandic people get in salary.

Both players are born 1950 and have played with the symphony for almost 40 years and now have the right to take early retirement. The principal clarinetist has played that position for over 30 years.

The concertmaster has also retired after similar long service. The principal oboe has also played since 1973 in the Symphony and I think it will not be long until he will also retire. Also these players are the second generation of players after the symphony was found in 1950 and have been part of taken the symphony to a high level but now it's time for younger players to get their opportunity to shine.
