Hi,
Today I was looking at instrument that my schools owns. I saw a Eb clarinet and I was wondering what do they sound like?
Thanks,
deejay

If it was an Eb sopranino, it will sound high and somewhat penetrating.
If it was an Eb alto, it will sound lower than a Bb and mellow. Its lower notes will remind you of the bass clarinet.

Not in the hands of someone who knows how to set it up and play it properly.

I play the Eb clarinet in my high school band, and it is a very frustrating instrument to get in tune. My teacher says that I am doing a really good job in getting the instrument not to sound so piercing when I play high off staved notyes. You have to learn not to "overblow" the Eb clarinet because since it usually plays in the high register, the notes will sound piercing and very out of tune. You also have to adjust your embouchure when you play the Eb clarinet (especially in the high notes, becuse it will get really flat or sharp). An Eb clarinet isn't really needed in a band as well unless there is a REALLY important solo needed by it since the Eb clrainet just doulbes the picc and flute parts (mostly). Well i hioped i helped you. bye!

A friend of my son's from HS band began on E flat soprano in October. (She has played b flat for over 8 years, and also plays tenor sax.) She made all-state (New Jersey) this past Saturday on the E flat! Surely the rairity of e flat players had a part in this, and she is of course an excellent musician... She's a senior, and this is her first acceptance to all-state, and she was the only one from her school to make it.

A lot depends on the instrument. I recently picked up a used Normandy Eb clarinet that is easy to play and is in tune from bottom to top! In spite of my fat fingers, it seems easier to play than my Leblanc Opus. Certainly more fun! Unfortunately, since we already have 2 Eb players in my community band, I don't have many opportunities to use it though.

In college I was lost in a sea of Bb clarinets until I found a brand new LeBlanc Eb in the instrument room together with an old beater for marching season. The director's attitude was that we probably needed an Eb player, but that one was likely to be too many. We did not have an oboe for concert season, so I convinced him that I could expand our music choices by playing oboe solos on the Eb. It did require some effort to control (as described in previous posts) and reeds were not generally available in the area at that time. I arranged for Sherman Clay in San Francisco to ship me three or four boxes of Vandoreen reeds per year and had a blast as the Eb clarinet section for about three years. I found the Eb to be a challenge, but lots of fun an well.

The poor much maligned Effer...Its a fun intrument and makes one a better Bb player by having to pay close attention to intonation and since it often doubles the first Bb Sop Clarinets or the Flute its an important bridge between the two sections. When i marched with it i often had to play the alto sax part on it if an Effer part didnt exist which made for an intersting obligato line sometimes. The one clarinet choir I was in with 4 of us did not do much for the old viola joke turned into an Effer joke though.. how do you get 2 Effers in tune? shoot one of them... Blake

Consider it the "piccolo" of clarinets. DON'T sit next to one in band if you don't want to go deaf!

hi,
I really think their neat and want to play one. My band teacher only has one and it needs to be overhauled badly. I asked him if i could buy it and he told me I couldn't cause it was the school. What diffrence does it make?! It will just sit and rot. No one hasn't played it for over 40 years maybe even longer!! How much would he sell it for if I talk him in to it?
thanks,
deejay

You don't say where you are or whether your high school is public or private. However, as a public school teacher in California, I can tell you that it might be considerably easier for you to find a used Eb to purchase elsewhere. The primary issue in a public school is that property is purchased with public money that has lots of strings attached (even if the item has been there a very long time). It is not up to the individual teacher to determine if or how they wish to dispose of property. In our district, for example, I can determine that a piece of equipment is no longer needed and recommend to the school board that it be disposed of. The school board then decides if they want to declare it to be surplus (logic does not necessarily follow in that decision). Once it is determined to be surplus (since the true value is in the eye of the beholder) it must be either trashed or sold at public auction to the highest bidder. By the time you go through all of that and then get the instrument repaired, I expect you could get a better deal elsewhere.
On the other hand, the Eb is lots of fun to play. Good luck.
