I'll be in London for a couple of days next week and will have time for a little shopping. Can anyone recommend clarinet haunts for me, please? I'm familiar with Howarth's but I wouldn't mind checking out some other shops. I'm not looking for anything special but I might be interested in a new mouthpiece or ligature. New, secondhand, jazz, these are my keywords. I'll be staying quite close to the BBC in the West End so it will be foot and tube to get around.
I'll be interested in more general music shops as well. They tell me that there is another world out there beyond the clarinet but they say a lot of things, don't they.

Sax.co.uk is off Charing Cross Rd., nearest tube station is Tottenham Court Rd.
Lewingtons used to be on Shaftesbury Ave., but they're long gone from there.

Howarth's is easily the best in central London. Dawkes in Maidenhead might be worth a look for mouthpieces (Anton Weinberg is the resident expert) - walkable from the station (frequent trains from London Paddington).

The place to go for general music shops in central London is Denmark St, which is off Charing Cross Road near to Tottenham Court Road tube station. This is where sax.co.uk is. There are lots of guitar shops, and a few places to buy music books. Across the road is the legendary Foyles book shop, which has a good music department. Last time I was in there they had a live performance (free) by a jazz quartet in their cafe.

Thank you, Dominic, but I just got home last night. Had a nice time in the big city and was pleased to find that I only felt the need to make one clarinet related purchase. I bought a Vandoren M/O ligature and am finding it much nicer than the Rovner dark that I had been using. I was surprised at the difference but, as they say in the Tour de France, your mileage might vary.
