Hi, I'm looking to start my search to buy my own clarinet before I go off to college. I just wanted some advice where some good places would be to start my search for a used r13, and to know what to look for and what to avoid. Thanks!

I would look for a place that would allow you to try it before you buy it.
Go to http://ridenourclarinetproducts.com/articleindex.html. I suggest reading "How to select a new clarinet" and "you picked it, you play it"
THEN, take those ideas, and a tuner, and try out whatever clarinets you are thinking of buying.

The most important thing is intonation, especially that the throat tones are not flat and the 12th are not too large. You can easily make the throat tones flatter with a longer barrel, tape in the holes or depressing extra fingers but it they are flat relative to the break notes it's tough to fix. If the 12th are to large it is a major problem. Key action can be adjusted and even to a degree, tone can be adjusted by trying some different barrels but intonation, that's a problem you don't want to buy. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
