I just bought a Selmer C85/115 bass clarinet mouthpiece and I think the sound is much better than the standard C* I've been playing on for years. I've tried the main custom mouthpieces and nothing was working for me. This Selmer has a better response than the C* and retains the solid core sound I like in Selmers. The tone is a touch brighter with more higher harmonics, but it still has a rich round bass sound.
I tried 3 mouthpieces from a reputable online store I frequently do business with (WWBW). 2 of the mouthpieces were stamped with the Selmer logo and facing number so that the markings were actually engraved into the rubber. The 3rd mouthpiece, and the one I decided to keep, only has the logo written on the mouthpiece, but not engraved into the material. This mouthpiece also had very different playing characteristics, visibly thicker rails, and more pronounced tool marks on the inside. Can anyone out there familiar with Selmers explain the difference in appearance between the 2 mouthpieces and the 1 I kept. All have the Selmer logo, same C85/115 facing number, and came in a brand new Selmer box. Perhaps the non-engraved mouthpiece is newer or older than the others? Thanks for the info!
I'm guessing WWBW is big enough to deal directly with Henri Selmer so I doubt this mouthpiece is a cheap knock off. Just curious is all.
